Chlorinated Paraffin Wax
INTRODUCTION
SuvChlor is
manufactured by chlorination of paraffin hydrocarbons of varying carbon
chain lengths, under carefully controlled conditions. Several grades
are available to suit individual requirement. These grades differ in
chlorine content, viscosity and specific gravity. The normal grades
manufactured are suvChlor 40, 45, 52, 58, 65, and 70, where the figures
represent the vCentage of chlorine. All grades of SuvChlor are suitably
stabilized to withstand normal temperature, storage etc.
Because of its low
price, special chemical properties and versatility, SuvChlor is used in
the most varied branches of mineral oils, plastics, rubber processing,
lacquers, surface coating, polysuphide sealants, auxiliary substance
for leather, textile and metal working.
GENERAL PROPERTIES
SuvChlor is
neutral, clear, pale-yellow viscous liquid. Its viscosity, however,
depends on its chlorine content. It is insoluble in water, soluble to a
limited extent in lower aliphatic alcohols and fully soluble in common
organic solvents, in most mineral, animal and vegetable oils. All
grades of SuvChlor are mutually miscible, so much so, they are
compatible with almost all plasticizers, resins, esters, condensation
products and high polymer and waxes.
SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS
Low volatility,
flame retardance, compatibility with fillers and pigments,
emulsifiability, clear appearance and low inherent colour. It is
non-toxic and is recommended for application coming in contact with
food.

PVC COMPOUNDING
SuvChlor grades
having 40% to 52% chlorine content are employed in PVC as primary or
secondary plasiticizers on account of their good compatibility with PVC
and common ester plasticizers. The most economic grade for use in PVC,
however, is SuvChlor-52, which has the maximum compatibility and
consequently it can replace more of costly primary plasticizer. In
fact, the compatibility of SuvChlor-52 with PVC is so good that in many
rigid or semi-rigid applications such as PVC Pipes & Fittings,
films, floorings, leather cloths, where DOP levels are not more than 20
phr, DOP can be completely replaced with SuvChlor-52. Addition of
SuvChlor-52 to PVC improves resistivity increases and so also flame
retardancy of the compound. SuvChlor-52 possesses good PVC gelling
capability. Where DOP is cheaper, SuvChlor-52 is used mainly as a fire
retardancy additive, otherwise, it is used mainly as a cost saving
additive.
PAINT INDUSTRY
SuvChlor-52 as well
as SuvChlor-58 can be used as plasticizer for flexibility and
plasticizing additives to compatible binders and resins in the
manufacture of paints and other coating compositions. Its use is
economic and makes if possible to achieve specialized properties,
Compatibility of the combination of bonding agents or resins with
suvChlor is achieved if they are miscible and the suvChlor exhibits no
noticeable sweating tendency (SURFACE STICKNESS) in the proportions
used. Good results are obtained with soluble vinyl chloride vinylidene
chloride co-polymers. There is also compatibility or limited
compatibility with cyclic rubbers, styrene-butadiene copolymers,
cellulose derivatives, alkyd resins, polyvinyl acetals and acetates,
maleic resins, cournarone resins, ketone resins as well as linseed oil,
wood oil and other paint bonding agents and resins. SuvChlor is
compatible with majority of the common plasticizers. It can often be
used to replace other conventional plasticizers, like DOP, DBP, etc.
RUBBER INDUSTRY
SuvChlor is used in
the Rubber Industry as a fire retardant additive as well as a
replacement of DOP in Nitrile Rubber Compounds. In mining, as well as
in shipbuilding and aircraft constructions, the rubber goods are
required to be-flame-retardant and SuvChlor plays an important role.
SuvChlor can also be used in conjuction with antimony Trioxide or
Aluminium Hydroxide in order to obtain improved antiflame properties.
As a flame retardant, SuvChlor-70L is recommended, whilst as a
plasticizer SuvChlor-52 is excellent. It is also used as a process oil
for Neoprene.
